Historic districts in Petersburg are listed on the state and national registers, recognition that does not come with any restrictions or design control. Some, but not all, are also locally-designated; these districts do fall under the purview of the Architectural Review Board (ARB). The city’s Preservation Planner, in Planning and Community Development, staffs the ARB for its monthly meetings where Certificates of Appropriateness are granted to applicants for exterior changes to structures.
